They would just make a report of it and file it for "future reference"...
I had my lawn mower stolen, and chain saw, right out of my shed...
Neighbor witnessed the person walking down the alley with it, and what house he walked into, and didnt call the Police... Waited until I got home and told me!
I called them and they came, ask for serial numbers..(now, HOW MANY of you actually KEEP serial numbers???).. I couldnt produce it, so, they said it was my word against his, (the thief), and they would have to drop it...
I was mad as a hatter and I totally lost it...
And, with that, I never got my stuff back and I moved, after informing my neighbor what I thought of him...(No, I wasnt a Christian, until many years later, and I regret it now, telling him off like that, because I dont store my treasures on Earth anymore, but in Heaven).
I wish you well..
Jesse

Its possible that the person who has committed the crime has a history of doing the same thing and the police are just waiting for someone to report him. If you don't trust the police ask them if they have a secret witness program. The police may take the threat out of your neighborhoods, and they need people to be on their side. However its not like what you see on the TV, they just want to do a good job, like everyone else. Good speed.

Well, let's see, my illegal immigrant neighbors came over and stole my son's crib mattress, a cooler and a plastic gas container from in front of my garage when I was cleaning it out. I didn't say anything to them but I called the cops and the Mexicans gave the stuff back. They said they thought I was throwing it away which is crap because it was leaning against the garage door and no where near any garbage or the street. I pressed charges because these same "people" were also stealing cable from me (didn't get in trouble for that either cause no one could prove they connected it) and tried to break into my house i the middle of the night more than once when I was home alone with my toddler. Anyways, two months later I call the police to find out why I hadn't gotten anything in the mail regarding a court date or whatever and the cop tells me he didn't file charges because he didn't think the intended to commit a crime... OK so I guess they didn't intend to commit a crime when they were stealing my cable and bragging about that, or when they threatened me for calling the cops on them, or when they snuck across the border and stole someones identity to stay here illegally.
Cops won't do crap.

The witness reports the crime, the police find the evidence - that's the way it's supposed to work.

the police will try to find evidence. It's amazing what they can find. Crime should be reported, even if they can't convict him, they will start a file on that person, and have them as a person of interest. If they run across this again, and the same names are coming up, they will put two and two together.

The old antage sooner or later comes to play. The witness is the evidence and even if that doesn't play out enough the odds are if its reported sooner or later it will get figured out. Crime doesn't pay! or does it.

Depends on the crime and the jurisdiction.
Sometimes witness testimony is all the "evidence" needed.

As long as the witness is credible they will pursue the issue. They will make a report at the very least regardless of the witnesses credibility. What did you do?

I refuse to Answer this Question, on the grounds that it may tend to incriminate me :
Aiding, abetting, and alerting a criminal is as much a crime as committing it yourself !

still after you report it they will ask people around that place and that time if they saw at least they will keep an eye on him better than let him go and will do it to another person
