I hear the expression "Christmas in July" lots of times. It's cool that you guys in Australia celebrate in July when the weather's cool there. Do you celebrate in December too?

Here in the US it's mostly commercial. Since it's 6 months (less even, I guess!) until Xmas, the retailers want us to start shopping again and remind us that it's just around the corner.

I think most other southern hemisphere countries follow the "Xmas in July" tradition that we have here in Australia.
