Edison was charging outrageous royalties for use of his film system so a group of film makers left New York and went to the other side of the country to try and get out of paying them. It didn't work.

The guy, I forgot his name , wanted to film a western, so he bought a ticket to Flagstaff Az, he got off the train , saw trees and snow, not desert and said oops, this is no place for a western, he then bought a ticket to the end of the line .. So. California... and the rest is history
