Males have longer claws in their front legs. The cloaca (posterior opening) in females is located closer to the carapace (the shell covering the top of a turtle's body) than in males.

Aside from the longer claws on the male take a look at the Plastron (bottom of the shell) which is flat on a female and concave on a male. This is an adaption to help him not fall off during mating.

You can tell if your turtle is a male or female by looking at its tail because a male has a longer tail or a male has longer claws.

Male aqua turtle’s tail is short and stubby. the female’s tail is lengthy and sharp. For reproductive purpose the boys underside is curved and woman have flatter undersides.
