July 21, 2006 Red Tide Update
Latests test results show that the red tide bloom is still present in northern Collier County and it is hugging the coastline.
Recent NOAA satellite images show high areas of chlorophyll to the south and southeast of Sanibel Island. NOAA is expecting possible northward transport of the existing bloom with southerly winds beginning this weekend. Winds will turn onshore by Saturday and could increase impacts to our northern beaches in Collier. This could include dead fish and respiratory irritation based on current red tide levels.
We have not received any reports of dead fish or respiratory irritation at our beaches since Monday, July 17, 2006. However, as wind conditions change, people with chronic respiratory illnesses, such as asthma or emphysema should exercise caution when going to the beach, as these illnesses may be aggravated.
