You should definitely plant more! 2 trees is not enough!

This depends on the size of your backyard. If it is small I wouldn't plant anything big, deciduous trees have very wide spread out roots which can undermine the foundation of your house. Evergreens have long, deep roots. Also be aware that trees too close to your house will also block a lot of natural light from reaching your property. There are some lovely, dwarf varieties of trees which I think would be much more suitable.

Forget what they say....Size matters.

In your case it depends on the size of your yard and the size of the trees in question. If you are looking for lots of shade you may want to grow several oaks, ginkgos, or catalpas. All provide height and shade.

If you plan to keep a grassy lawn be careful about planting too many trees because you will find it hard to grow grass in the shade and the trees will soak up every drop of water and nutrients.

Personally I like to see about a 50/50 mix of sun and shade around a house so you will need to do the math to see what works for you.

What ever you do don't plant the tree too close to the house. In seismic & wind prone regions they can split and crush your house, in fire prone regions they can help spread the fire to your house.

Contact a local nusery and work with them to get a sensible tree for your yard. It is a large and wise investment that you will live with as long as you are at that house so take your time and choose wisely.

For ideas on what tree to plant see the National Arbor Day Foundation web site.

Trees are an intregal part of your landscape . Look at your yard , and decide if you'd like more shade , if you have too much barrebn space between trees, etc. One very good rule to go by in landscaping, as well as art , etc... Things look much better in groups
of odd numbers ( three looks better than two , five better than four ..
something about balance ) I would say that if you have two , without even seeing your yard I 'd say that you should have at least one more .....

How large is your backybirdsard? Do you want the trees for shade or just to look at? How many leaves do you want to rake? Personally, I like lots of trees. They make your environment warmer in winter (by cutting the wind) and cooler in the summer (shade).Trees attract birds which are nice to watch and they eat lots of insects. A home with trees looks more settled.

Our ozone layer is being depleted because of the removal of trees. Plant as many as will fit in your yard. Give enough room for future growth.

ask at your garden center, its according to how large your lot is, and what kind of trees you plan to plant, things like dogwood are beautiful but slow growing and most yards could take several, and maples grow faster and are larger, and tulip trees and syscamore grow fast and get quite large so two might eventually be enough.
