My 14 yo son is playing the role of cleopatra in his year end play. I need somebody to explain me what should be the dress?, the makeup...including colors, jewelery an foot wear (or anklets). I look for some detailed answer. Also what sort of undergarment is suitable?

For the details of what the costume should look like you really ought to consult the show's director and costumer. If they're expecting you to build a classic Egyptian costume, try doing a google images search for inspiration; there are also many pre-made Cleopatra costumes.

Also, Mark Rylance played Cleopatra at the Globe Theatre in London. At their exhibit they have his costume on display and a video about his dressing process, but I can't find that information online. If you contact the theatre they may share information with you.

As a costumer, I have dressed men as women (for Shakespeare plays). The most effective way to build breasts is to sew them into a bra. I liked the effect we got using a strapless bustier, as it provided a small amount of cinching at the waist, without the restraint of a girdle.

For make up the most important aspect is the eyes, especially the black eyeliner. You can use blush and very red lipstick to help your son look more like a woman.

Good luck!

Reminds me of the one of the classic definitions of community theater. You've moved a couch offstage wearing a formal evening gown, a blond wig, and high heels. And your a guy....

Go by any fabric store and check the pattern section. Both Simplicity and McCall have patterns for Egyptian outfits that will give you some good ideas. (You should also be able to find the patterns online - simplicity.com). Even if you don't sew, it will give you a good picture for ideas. One of your favorite places to look when outfitting a show.

For undergarment, assuming they will not show, whatever he is comfortable wearing. At 14, he will probably want to put white gym shorts on underneath, as at the age they are usually still modest.

Tell your son we're rooting for him. Playing a "girl" on stage is one of the theatre traditions. So don't let him get too embrassed about it.

He's doing WHAT? And you're going along with it?

Can you explain to me why on earth a 14 year old BOY has been cast in the role of Cleopatra?

Where in the hell is this going on?

White linen with gold trim. Gold bangles. I would try to find jewelry with snakes in it. Black eyeliner with a little line going straight out from out-side corner of each eye. Try leather greek looking sandles, the ones that wrap aroung your legs. If there are any jewels try to make them red, or green.

Talk to the director. They usually have very specific ideas on how they want their leads to look.
