Can catfish eat people?

Question

Evidently years ago a speed boat hit and killed a giant 6ft catfish in Alabama. It was so large that it also did extensive damage to the boat. She is convinced that catfish that large have the ability to kill people. I have searched the net for even one instance of this ever happening and can find none. I have found that some catfish have been found messuring upwards of 9ft, and that some species have the ability crawl onto land in search of food. Her and her entire family believe this so I need some evidence to prove it is or isnt.

They can grow huge bat there has never been a recorded incident of one eating a human. The Pangasius catfish that resides in fast flowing rivers have been known to grow up to 9 feet +, but they are generally peacefull fish that eat whatever can fit in their mouths. Theoretically they could eat a small child, but would not attack one shark style, but if the child happened to venture into it's mouth it could swallow one.

Despite this theoretical possibility, It has never been reported.

No fish eats poo, and most fish will eat another fish if they can fit it in their mouths. Catfish will eat uneaten food off the bottom of the tank, and some varieties will eat algae. If you keep catfish, get some sinking catfish food and feed it according to directions. Usually a small pellet or part of an algae wafer will do per fish. A bottom feeder can starve in a healthy tank if no food is reaching it. Reference your fish book for more information.

well i.m sure that here in alabama we have 6 ft catfish, in south georgia i've seen even larger cats called appaloosa cats
have you ever watched shows about noodling or bulldogging where a man reaches under water and grabs a large catfish by hand? the last show i watched was in arkansas and they were pulling out some real monsters but i don't think that catfish would attack or kill a person, because they are scavengers they might snack on a dead person in the water

They found one the was the size of a small truck. I would think that they could. I have never heard of one that has. At the dam near my house people were fixing it scuba drivers and they were scared to go back down because they thought they catfish might eat them.

i have never heard of it happening, but i know a gentleman who is a diver.he does fish counts all over the u.s. he dives in differant lakes and resevoirs and is hired to do the fish counts.he has told me stories about haveing seen fish so large that they could swallow a man whole.he claims that he has seen fish larger than a school bus.i don't know if he is truthful about the size of fish he has seen, but he too says that he has never heard of catfish eating people either.i called him when i saw your question.

Check instances in "China" & "Indonesian", or "Brazil". I'm not sure if it is a myth, but it seems possible; esp. to small children that are swimming in the early morning or evening.
