I have always had success with tiger barbs. They look just like they sound. They are easy to care for if you buy them healthy and your tank is ready to accept fish. They can live within the normal range in temperatures but depending on where you live a heater may be necessary for all fresh waters.
What I always loved about tiger barbs is that they are schooling fish. With their orange and black stripes they are quite beautiful to watch in a nicely designed tank. They are semi-aggressive so you can add other fish but it's best if they are faster than the tiger barb. I had three bloodfins that did very well with my tigers. I have never had my tigers kill another fish but they tend to bite at others fins so I don't recommend angelfish. I did use algae eaters and they left them alone.
Hope I helped! Enjoy!
P.S. The general rule of thumb is one inch of fish per gallon and even some people say that it too much. Depends on the fish really. With a smaller tank, you should check its levels for things like ammonia and pH. Keeping the tank in a safe range will prevent many costly and time consuming problems for you and your fish.

Bettas CAN live with other fish. Bettas also do better in a heated and filtered tank of atleast 5 gallons.
If i had a 3 gallon tank (wich i dont because i do research and know that a tank that small is too much work and much harder to keep stable) i would only maybe put in 2 african dwarf frogs and a couple ghost shrimp and perhaps 3 white cloud moutain minnows.

I had several different varietties of gouramis in a fish tank at one time, and they lived for a long time, and looked very pretty to me. You should be able to get a cheap heater for the cost of about 4 or 5 fish also.

You can have a betta, just not two (male) bettas. A betta can live fine with some other species. If your tank has a filter, you should try a betta and three neons. If you can afford a small heater, it's good to keep a steady temperature and bettas like it a little warm.

actually, betas are great community tank dwellers, you just can't house two males together, you can put bettas in with a varity of fish ; includeing: guppies, mollies, tetras, ect. thelist goes on and on.good luck and have fun.P.S., try to introduce the fish into your tank aout 3 to 5 inches of fish at a time, this allows for bactera to reproduce fast enough to help in the processing of waste materials and lets you do water changes much less frquently if there is a filtration system in your tank.

Do you live somwhere that is normally hot or cold?
if you are living somewhere hot, where the normal temperature of the unheated water at room temperature is tropical temperature (24 degrees+ C or 75 degrees F ) then go for any of the tropical varieties of fish.
If you live somewhere cold, then you can get catfish, loaches or other kinds of colwater fish. a weather loach is hardy and helps to keep the tank clean.
Plecos and sturgeons are popular too.

Neon tetra's are a bright fish, yet they only substitute right into a around 2". i admire the flamboyant Tail Guppies their colorations are great and that they supply delivery to stay toddlers (you will possibly choose a place for the toddlers to cover or the mothers and fathers will eat them). yet another captivating Fish is a purple tail black shark, they improve to approximately 3-4" (they are actually not guy ingesting sharks) have exciting with installation the aquarium!

try a paradise fish. they have rainbow colours and they dont mind dirty water. they grow long tail tips and when they mate they can lay up to 500 eggs. they can live in harmony if you introduce each other when they are young. if you introduce them when they are old then they will kill each other and keep fighting. they are a bit like fighting fishes.
