I am an aspiring model without an agent, and right now I would prefer to get jobs on my own. Where should I start?

Seriously, get a reputable agent. I know you want to do it on your own, but I promise you that this only leads to lots of work and headaches. Most good (as in reputable) modeling agencies won't even talk to you without your agent present.

Even with an agent, you've still got a lot of work ahead of you to get a decent job. It's similar to being an actor. You need headshots, bodyshots, a portfolio, even a modeling resume which pretty much adds up to doing a lot of work for free.

You will have to pay an agent (especially when starting out) but whatever you do, DO NOT PAY ANYONE WHO CLAIMS TO BE AN AGENCY. I cannot stress this enough. Agencies provide jobs, if they are for real they don't need your money. There are a LOT of "agencies" out there that will make it seem really reasonable for you to be spending money either on them, or on all sorts of "services" (clothing, stylist, spas) that they end up recieving a kickback from. Don't get me wrong, you will be paying a lot for those kinds of services when starting out, but real agencies will not shuttle you to these places and expect a check or credit card from you.

You should go and check out Unblend Magazine. They focus
on up and coming talent. You can sign up (for FREE)
on their site. They're looking for unseen talent to feature in the
magazine. Also, if they see someone on the site that's really good, they will refer you to one of their affiliates in the business.
It's a great place to start because networking is very crucial in
this biz! (by the way, the website is unblendmag.com) Good luck.
