Your ankles bend easier from side to side than from forward and up. Plus it reduces the angle of incline slightly.

Lessons of the lazy. I used to do that when I ran hills for x-country. There was this steep 1/3 mile hill by my house. The first two treks up were fine. By the last lap, I zig-zagged myself to the same spot.

proper footing - if it is a very steep hill - if you walk zig zag your feet are more inclined to be pointed tot the side as opposed to straight forward - which will keep you from falling and putting stress on your knees.

It's because if you walk straight, you will lose your balance. If walking sideways, it helps to obtain your balance. To help keep you from falling down the hill. It doesn't matter what kind of hill is it or what's on it. It could be muddy or have snow on it. Do the sideway walk, it will help keep you from falling on your heads. And saving you from juries, exspecailly if you're alone.
