My husband and I thought it would be fun to cook dinner over a fire tomorrow night with our kids but we're not sure we're allowed to have a (controlled) fire in our back yard. Do we need to call the city and ask or should we just do it?

I forgot to add that tommorrow is a state holiday where I live so the city offices will NOT be open. I guess that leaves the fire department....

Call the police department or the fire department. Both will be able to tell you if you can or not, as well as what specifics you need to follow to do so. You may have to have rock surrounding the pit, or burn in a premade container, not just digging a hole. They may even have a no burning ordinance in effect if you are in an area that hasn't had a good share of rain. I would call and find out.
