Some women, once milk gets established, have a really strong "let down" of milk that can cause younger infants to choke. If you pull off and the milk is still squirting out without the baby sucking, this could be the case (especially if your breasts are hard when you begin to nurse.) To fix this, express or pump for a while when your baby starts choking, then as your breasts start to soften, put the baby back on to finish. Save the milk in the freezer for later, it's good for six months and by that time you may want to go out without baby and a sitter can use it. As your baby grows, he or she will become better able to manage a fast flow of milk and the problem will go away (BTW - this problem is a much better one to have than too little milk). If you don't think fast milk let-down is the problem, take the baby to the doctor for evaluation. It could be reflux, or some anatomical anolmaly, or a problem with the suck/swallow reflex. Good luck -- and don't stop nursing, it's the best thing you can do at this point to keep your little one healthy.

Make him or her slow down a bit by feeding for 5 minutes at a time, try to burp the baby for 30 - 60 seconds in an upright position, then put him or her back on for another 5 minutes, and so on. It could be that he or she is rushing or that too much air is getting in. There may be extra air that needs to come up hence the choking. Take your time and relax. Rub his or her back when burping between those 5 minutes. This worked for 2 of my grandsons as they had a horrible time before I got my daughter in law to try my method. They had reflux and so it was more difficult for them, but the slowing down helped tremendously. Don't give up breast feeding as it is a very healthy choice. Best wishes!

Your baby is choking on your milk during the feeding or after it is all said and done? If it's during the feeding but towards the end that's normal. Just take the child off your nipple and sit them up. What is happening is called let down. It's when your breast milk is really flowing well right toward the end and your baby is just sucking to hard and getting to much out at a time to swallow. if they seem ok offer him or her your breast again but you may try pumping after that happened to relieve some of the pressure and slow down the milk flow for a minuet or two before returning them to the breast.

Choking is sometimes a sign that he child is being held in a position where the mouth is lower the the esophagus at release. Make sure when the child is disengaged it is in an upright position.

Does your clinic or hospital have an on-call nurse you can consult? Be sure to call your doctor about this. Until you can reach the doc, be sure that you are holding the baby in a position so that he/she can swallow easily - (not laying down flat) - & make sure you are burping the baby frequently. Take breaks, and remain calm. Make sure the baby's nose isn't plugged up -- sometimes that makes it hard for them to swallow. I wish you well! Your baby is lucky to have a mom who is concerned about this! Good Luck -- and call the doc!

Make sure you're holding her up against your breast, not leaning down to her. Then hold her up in that position til you get about 4 burps out of her. If she still chokes, your nipple may be too big. Try pumping.

Hold the baby in your arms, upright. Don't lay on bed or floor to feed. if that doesn't help, call Dr.
