Right now, it's still pretty safe. There are some fake torrents going around, and some with viruses / spyware. It really depends on the source you are downloading the torrent from. A large source will have fewer fake/malicious torrents that Joe Blow's geocities site.

if its not a copywrited material then you can download torrents but you can never trust the internet so put antivirus and anti-spyware in place and firewall also then only download anything from net.

ofcourse as long as its not copyrighted which is like 90% of torrents. and doesn't have a virus.
