A dial-up connection does not even come close to operating at the computer's speed, so there is no difference.

It is strictly a matter of space & preference.

For dial up, both are same. But if space is not an issue I would recommend external modem. I am in the industry for last 7 years and have seen internal modems giving weired problem like conflicts and failures. Also its easy for you to connect and access the cable more easily than the internal one, which you need to go the back of your PC. You will get a PCI slot freed up also if you use an External modem.

External modems will eliminate PCI slot sharing problems if there are any. Sometimes an external modem will allow a faster hookup because of line noise or interference compared to internal modems. Used and still do Diamond and USR externals for people with crappy phone lines. Expect to pay $60.00 or more (US) for an external............

usually internal modems are for dial up as external is for broadband so external is better...
