please get a ferret! coatimundi are not good pets . We should know we had one living with us. My mother in-law had one and it was like having a herd of 3 year olds in the house. It was into everything, knocking everything down, chewing everything, peeing, biting also. No amount of training would stop this behavior. He was eventually built a very, very large cage out in the barn. Which he escaped many times figuring the locks out each time we changed them or finding weak points in the fencing. They are alot like raccoons. check this site out http://www.ferretrescue.com/
She is right about the price in the long run it costs about that much total and a 6x6 cage would never have been large enough our cage was 12Lx8hx6w. Please understand these are super smart and super curious animals. Ours eventually went to the zoo. He needed a larger more inviting space than we could give.

Even if you have re-hab experience a coati is a lot to handle if you're only in the 8th grade. Heck, they're alot to handle if you're an adult and have your own house. A ferret cage is not adequate for a coati, regardless of how young they are. They need very large, sturdy cages because they will eventually figure out how to get out of anything you put them in. I would contact other wildlife rescues, or try to find someone in your area that has exotic experience that might be more set up to handle that type of animal. Make sure that whoever you agree to release him to knows exactly what they're getting into. I've seen people who think they can handle them end up not going past 6 months, or doing something like removing all claws and a lot of teeth, and keep it confined rather than face the fact they are not equipped to handle the animal. It can be daunting, and hard to admit you can't care for something when you rescue it and bottle feed it for so long, but it happens to the best of us sometimes. Take your time in finding it a new, well qualified home. Don't give up in frustration and just let him go to any new home. Contact local wildlife or exotic specialists and see if they can help point you in the right direction, or even a shelter would be able to get you started. Don't give him away without someone filling out an adoption contract and doing a background/vet/home check on them. All sorts of crazyness will come out for an exotic pet. If someone is serious and a good home, they won't mind the checks. Good luck.

Read up guys. It's about bottle feeding and training. Thus some are NOT happy campers. Honestly, the stupidity of people. Bottle feed them play with them and make sure they are nuetered or spayed and They are happy campers. Even cats knock over ****. Coatis are a beautiful amazing animal, and as for vets most use canine/cat vaccinations thus it would be costly but not as much as a cat that is constantly outside. Coatis need a semi large cage and outdoor one and mostly be outside of said cage. The food is easy 60 percent of their g\food is a 5lb 20$ bag of dog food with no grain rest is vegetables and things. No chocolate or cereal for them things like that. Read up guys I read up and i'm planning on getting one. Dogs belong in the wild too did you know that? Cats too they are all wild animals but we "domesticated them" Same with coatis they too are domesticated.

A coatimundi is NOT meant to live in a ferret cage, or anyone's home for that matter. Take him to a wildlife rehabilitation center. He may be awesome and cute, but seriously, do the right thing.

i looked them up once and if i had the resources might get one... basically it costs a lot... over the course of caring for the animal... keeping it healthy, etc... it will cost you a lot more than 1 grand... they are very active animals and require a lot of entertainment... you can't just keep them locked in a cage and expect them to be social... some of them get more agressive and less social as they get older like raccoons... so you'd have to be prepared to deal with and accept that as well. they need a large space to live in, frequent contact with humans, and wide range of entertaining toys, games to figure out, and other stimuli in their environment...

They're illegal in many parts and require special permitting and housing. Plus, they're wild animals and should never be viewed as pets. They belong in the wild. Only selfish people would consider making wild animals live in captivity because of a whim of an interest.

Figure $15,000 at least. Purchase, housing, permitting, specialized diet, veterinary care. Ever try finding a vet for an animal like that?

A 6x6x6 enclosure would be entirely inhumane. Check out the costs for veterinary care.
