Some athletes are mentally capable to handle expectations, pressure and spotlight. Jordan signed something like a $30mil contract for one year, knowing he'd have to show the world that he was worth every dime. And in large part, he did.
A-Rod signed a $252mil contract for 10 years, meaning he's getting Jordanesque money for 10 (not 1) years. That's a long time to be on top of one's game and produce in support of a salary that not even your teammates on the Yankees can boast of.
Fielding is all mental, in my book. If you practice a lot, attack the ball or manage the hops and set before you throw to any base, you'll be okay. A-Rod's got something in his head that says he must make up for bad outings at the plate by pulling off some miracle on the field. Gets you in trouble.
A-Rod is a talented player, but on the Yankees, you are revered for clutch and for heart. Jeter, Tino, Paulie, Bernie, Mo....they all performed when it counted the most because THAT'S the moment they live for. A-Rod, he's not that hungry, in my opinion, and therefore he's not going to shine in those moments that require you to be hungry, fearless, confident and composed (likely why he's at ease when the Yanks are up or down by 10 runs).
That being said, is there a better 3rd baseman in the game? Uh, no. He's getting razzed for his salary, not so much his play. His post-season numbers are admirable (look into it before believing the hype), but he's got to do something to install himself in the lore of the greatest franchise in team sports (a la Aaron Boone, Jeter, Brosius, Tino, Paulie, Mo, Rocket, etc.) Rivera, to me, has choked in the biggest situations he's faced ('97, '01, '04), but he's still considered the most unhittable pitcher ever, because he's got guts and hunger and doesn't let failure cloud his mental focus on his job. When A-Rod gets hungry and focused, this stuff will all go away.

He's A-Rod and that's not gonna change to E-Rod. What, are the other players who commit errors gonna be called something else also?

A rod is going through mental issues...playing in ny is the most difficult place to play and he is the highest profile player in mlb with his supercontract...if he is not perfect and clutch in ny the fans will ride the hell out of him like they have and now its just overwhelming him and hes pressing...im a new yorker and i was jeering him in the past but now i think its too much and he needs some real fan support
