Seeing that the Internet is a connection of computers, it would be quite difficult. There are, however, major backbones in huge non-descript buildings that very few ever get to see. They are owned by large telecom companies. In theory, if you destroyed those buildings, you could cripple the Internet. One would have to destroy many large hubs and ISP headquarters to make the entire net come down.

No this is not possible unless there is an infiltration of our entire society by a group that could do it.

Each connection travels through datalines locally which are connected nationally by who else?? Bellsouth!!!

OK. So they'd have to knock out switching stations in every city in every country that there is one. Each station is capable of handling standalone communications locally for a time but not nationally.

Of course something like this would have to take place all over the world at the same time.

No. The "internet" refers to the collective thousands upon thousands of servers all over the world. There's no way to take all of them down at once.
