It works basically like your cordless house phone where you have a base which is connected to your phone jack and the phone handset.
In the case off computers, you have a wireless card in the computer which wirelesslly connects to a wireless router connected to your internet connection.

It stands for "wireless fidelity" internet connection. It doesn't require a cable attached to the internet...a signal is broadcast and your computer or nintendo ds receive the signal and you can access the internet.
