Gotta luv the fact that no one seemed to answer your question. My mother's from germany and she says learning english was essential to her education. It wasn't even an option for her. We don't wave a german flag from our front yard, we're american with a deep german heritage. But that just reflects our background, not our patriotism. We came here for the freedoms and the protections that the american government offers. In my opinion, anyone who doesn't learn the laws and the language of the land can't possibly respect the country they live in. Mexico isn't part of america, Fox sticks a knife in the back of the U.S. every chance he gets. For being the third richest country (as far as oil production), he also seems to stick the knife in his poverty ridden citizens as well. So I don't know why there isn't a more extreme form of border protection in this country. Look how many drugs come in through that vast unprotected border on the backs of human mules. Uneducated people make poor choices, so try not to be so hard on these ignorant answerers. They obviously were love the american dollar, now if we can just get them to read the constitution.

A lot of respondents before me are operating on the basis of half-truths.
Let's start with the whole immigration thing. First of all, you have to draw a time line. Human beings evolved in East Africa, probably in or near the Oldivi Gorge, in modern Ethiopia or Kenya.
Therefore, anybody who lives anywhere else is an immigrant to that place.
"Native Americans" did not originate here. They most likely came from two tribes in Mongolia, walked across what is now the Bering Straits, and gradually moved southward. (Incidentally, the person who says they were originally Australian Aborigines doesn't know what he/she is talking about. Aboriginal people arrived on the Australian continent after North America had a human population. DNA testing and tracing mitochondria through the female line has established these facts.)
But, let's pick a convenient date, like the beginning of the Industrial Era, around 1750.
By that time, about 700,000 Europeans lived on the East Coast. There may have been some, but not very many, Spaniards in the West. But, that's pretty speculative -- except for the padres who had already started building missions in California.
At that time, Mexico (established by Spain, then France, then Spain, then Mexico) extended through Texas and northwest to about the current border of Oregon.
In the late 1840's, the United States and Mexico went to war against each other because the U.S. decided to take Texas away from the Mexican authorities.
The U.S. won the war, and a treaty was signed in 1848, called the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The treaty ceded all of the western lands (Texas, New Mexico, most of Arizona, Nevada, part of Colorado, part of Utah, and California) to the United States. In exchange, Mexico was guaranteed that there would be an eclesia in those territories.
Previously, an eclesia (official church) was banned by the Bill of Rights. But, when the treaty was signed, most of all land west of the Mississippi was U.S. territory, but not states. So, in effect, the government said that the Catholic Church could be the official church of state of the newly acquired lands.
Moreover, Mexicans who had land grants (either from the King of Spain or the King of France) would retain title to their lands, if they chose to live north of the Rio Grande (or Rio Bravo, from the Mexican side).
The treaty also clearly stated that they would be allowed to speak their own language (Spanish, for the most part) and retain their customs.
As was the case with nearly every other treaty that the government entered into back in those days, every guarantee was violated.
Modern Mexican Americans who know their history rightly see the western part of the United States as an extension of Mexico because, if we didn't live up to our part of the treaty, why should they?

maybe u should try to understand that Mexicans are just as patriotic to Mexico as Americans are patriotic to the U.S. and think about it, if u live in a different country wouldn't u still be proud to be from the united states.i mean if u lived in Mexico would you shout out ''viva Mexico'' from the roof tops?the reason why they might sneer at American is because some people get too into being ''patriotic'' that they think they are better then every one else.i mean if u go to other countries they usually look down at Americans because of this.not all Americans are this way but that is the stereo type. i dont think your racist i just think u havent had a chance to look at thing differently.there is a lot of poverty and hunger in mexico and dats y most people resort to coming to the U.S ilegaly but i agree the border thing is a big problem.and may u should keep in mind that not all latinos are mexican

They don't act like, they know. the first Americans were descendants of Australian Aborigines, then became the Native Americans, Aztec Indians, and Conquistadors own America, we should b glad their letting us kick it. Look at the state of California, some cities are Spanish names: San Bernadino, San Diego, San Juan Capistrano, San Luis Obispo, San Francisco, Mission Viejo, Del Amo, and any other Sans.. Real talk, you, I, and everyone on this website saw that Historical day on TV "How many Mexicans",where in the streets of their cities and states...Unbelievable,and half of them were doing it because they wanted to and felt that it was their right. George Bush was even for it, he didn't call for the National Guards..and why? because at his ranch "Camp David, that's all who runs and takes care of it. Hell! they use to be illegals, but now their legals{of course, Presidents have their privileges}, especially when his ranch is right near the border. ?Que lastima?

Perhaps they should rush our borders, get us all drunk and shoot us and then, perhaps take our land allotting us a tiny portion in which to live. They could call the land they set aside for us reservations.
The moral of the story is.......we are all immigrants with exception of the Native American people, whom we treated like outsiders in their own land when we came across the Atlantic Ocean to ultimately steal that land. Be happy that other immigrants just want to live among us, okay? Please!
