i'm running xp home (unfortunately) and i actually have this problem on my laptop and my parents computer. i am not able to open up folders, ie my computer, control panel, etc. i'm also not able to open up IE or AIM or shut down via the start menu, i've got to hold the button down for a bit before it shuts down. i've defragged both computers a few days ago and just recently installed a registry cleaner. any thoughts? thanks

Not Thee registry cleaner I hope. That is like the epitome of spyware... now if it was abexo registry cleaner, or hi-jack this.. has a registry cleaner, or a symantec, or spybot cleaner.. than I am as lost as you are.. You may want to sart with scanning your computer for viruses.. If your virus Scan program not working, than try to Scan from with-in IE or firefox, or opera, etc.. From this site... http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/home_homeoffice/virus_startcheck.html after that, you can try running spybot and or ad-aware personal http://www.filehippo.com/download_spybot_search_destroy http://www.filehippo.com/download_ad-aware Good luck, if them don't work IM or E-mail Technical_13@yahoo.com

;go to start and then run type in MSCONFIG this will start a whole new window. In this window click on the tab that reads startup and at the bottom click disable all. Click OK then Apply this will now ask you to restart the computer. Tell the system yes. When the computer restarts you will get a prompt for being in MSCONFIG. put a check mark in the box at the bottom of the screen then click ok.

This feature turns of all programs running in the background. When the system comes up from the restart you will notice almost every program that started before and put an icon in the lower right corner by the clock is gone. Once the system is done starting go ahead and try to do everything that was not working before. If they work then you are having a program conflict.

By doing this you have no deleted these programs from the system you have just turned them off from starting when the system starts.

If you have had windows on these computers for a while sometime a clean reinstall will clear up most problems.

Windows usually goes for about a year before it starts getting screwed up. Just remember to back up your files.

It might be due to some spy ware. Eliminate with some antiswpwares like Spybot Search and Destroy, Spy catcher, etc.
