Have any of you moved from L.A. to NYC (or in reverse, or of similar distances)? I've heard that I shouldn't take anything big, especially furniture, because it is prohibitively expensive, but I love my stuff so I'd like to bring some of it.

I would like to hear about any moves people have made recently. What did you take and how much did it cost? Any recommendations for cheaper ways to do this? Thanks for any advice.

First piece of advice (that nobody gave me) if you are moving to NY have 3 months rent ready to pay out -- first month rent, damage deposit, and broker fee. You may even have to throw in last months rent. Plus don't forget the cost of the credit report (so you may want to bring yours with you). Seriously, it cost me over 4,000 just to get into an apartment in NY. That's the way it is. Plus really look online (I suggest craigslist) and get a good idea of the going market rate in NY. This is a very expensive city to live in.
As far as the cost to move here. It actually wasn't that bad. My brother drove his car, and I drove mine, and we had them both stuffed to the gills -- with all that small stuff. We went about 2200 miles, and it cost (for both cars) right around 900 (this was 2 years ago when gas was cheaper). Just figure out the mileage your car gets, and then the miles you are moving and multiplying it. From Washington State to here, we drove for about 4 days of fairly hard driving, but we stopped in hotels every night. So that was between 60-120 a night, depending on what we could find. Then you throw in the cost of meals, and the sight-seeing places you feel you HAVE TO visit.
Then when I got here, I realized I did not have any furniture, so then I had to go about buying it all again. Not Cheap! So consider where you are planning on living. If you are just going to rent a room (especially a furnished one) then you don't have to bring much or plan on buying new.
If you have a friend with a truck or a trailer, and they are willing to help you, it could be economical to use that truck to bring some of your big furniture type stuff and drive back.. but you have to consider the other variables too.
Good luck.

I was born in New York and have been to LA, and quite frankly there is no way I would want to live in either, But if you must a small container, similar but smaller than those used on container ships, that you load and unload yourself is the cheapest way to move large items. The companies that move them will store them for a reasonable fee if you need them too until you are settled.

It's better if you contact moving companies, Allied Van Lines, Mayflower, etc.

There are many moving companies, be sure you read the contract VERY carefully. See if they have information on their websites.
