On a TV program about tigers once the expert said house cats purr and tigers roar, but its the same thing to them. But who knows if he was right.

No. They don't have the purring equipment. They have roaring equipment. In circumstances that a cat would normally be purring tigers sound more like a low growl. Cheetahs are a large cat that can purr.

go up to one and pet it, then you can tell me (just kidding). All cats can purr, the ones that roar however (tigers included) sound more like a growl, and the sound is often confused with a growl.

Yes... It varies in detail from cat to cat (e.g., loudness, tone, etc.), and from species to species, but can be characterized as a sort of tonal buzzing. Some cats purr so strongly that their entire body vibrates.

Yes and you may be able to induce it in a tiger by feeding it catnip and if it gets stoned. (some do), you'll hear it. Be careful though the zoo staff will give you the boot if they catch you feeding it to "Tony"
