How about this: toilet paper was once used as a defensive weapon during World War 2. No, really...
Here's the deal; during the the first half of WW2, the British Navy's front-line torpedo bomber was a big ol' biplane (i.e. WW1 style, Snoopy vs. the Red Baron and all that...) with a top speed of (at most) 140 mph, while the enemy's fighter planes could manage more than twice that (300mph or more...). And all they had for defense was a single machine gun firing over the tail, which wasn't a whole lot of help...
What to do?
I don't know if it was by accident, or if it was a result of some thoughtful deliberation, but someone came up with the idea of tossing a roll of t.p., secured by a rubber band or two, into slipstream created by the airplane's propeller, causing it to immediately shred into a million pieces, freaking out the enemy pilot chasing the Brits and causing him to break off the attack.
Brilliant, no? I would love to meet the guy who thought of that...
