Yes, it is absolutely possible for the ultrasound technician to be wrong about the baby's gender. As my doctor puts it, gender ultrasounds are more of an 'educated guess', than an exact science.

A gender ultrasound generally can not be done before the 18th week of pregnancy, this is because in a male fetus, his privates may not be fully developed, and he may be mistaken for a girl.

When I went for my level two ultrasound (the big one, that also checks the gender), I was told that the ultrasound technician 'thinks I am having a girl'. He said that he is 80% sure. Most technicians will never say that they are 100% sure what the sex of the baby is, and most people get around about an 80-90% probability guess of the gender. This is why I am planning on having another ultrasound later on in my pregnancy, to confirm that I am indeed expecting a little girl.

It is easier to determine if a fetus is a boy, than it is if a fetus is a girl. This is because the ultrasound technician sets about looking for a penis. If they can not see one, then most often they assume it is a little girl.

The only exact way to determine if a fetus is a boy or a girl before delivery, if through testing of the amniotic fluid that surrounds him/her. As skin cells etc get caught in that fluid, scientists are able to analyse the DNA to tell the gender. This is only done, when there is a heridary disease, that can affect one gender over the other, as there is a slight risk of miscarriage.

Yes, anything is possible. When I went to have my child's sex determined the tech told me that although it was a strong possibility it was female don't but anything pink. Babies can be positioned differently which would make it appear to have be a boy when actually it's a hand or thumb of a girl. So I would take the result of the ultrasound with a grain of salt although most likely the odds are in it's favor.

If you really want to know the sex of your baby, take a needle and thread, hold it over someone's head, it doesn't matter who, and see which way the needle moves. It will either go round and round, or back and forth. Whatever direction the needle moves it's telling you the sex of that person. Now take the needle and hold it over your abdomen, not close to the belly button. See which way the needle moves. You should be able to tell by how it moves what you're having. A word of warning, if you hold it too close to your belly button, it will tell you it's a girl every time, because it's reading your sex, not the baby's. When I do it, it goes around and around for a boy and back and forth for a girl. But everyone is different. Try it! If nothing else, it will keep you occupied for awhile!

yes, sometimes you have a boy whos "stuff" is hiding and the doctor doesnt see it and tells you its a girl. or if an ultrasound is taken too early both male and female have something down there, the girls turns into the clitoris, and she could be confused for a boy. it happens all the time.

absolutly! though ultra sounds are geetting incressingly better there is always a chance that it could be wrong only way to be sure before birth is to have they test the plesenta. they do this by drawing a vary small amount of plesenta out of you womb anmd testing it. thsi can also tell if they have any developmental issues too but does carry a small risk of miscarrage.
