I hear lots of theories like our Universe is approximatly 12 billion years old and that it at all started with THE BOMB known as the big bang, more to that they say this Universe could in the end envelope back again and shrink back into an infinitismally small point in space and then explode again, OR if theres not enough matter in the Universe then it will simply keep on "expanding" to the limitless beyond, now heres the real question, if the universe is in fact expanding, and say the "universe" is all there is, all that can exist, doesnt it occur to you in a strange thought that what lies beyond the i guess the expanding "egde" of the Universe itself? its like imagining a balloon expanding in empty space, is the empty space around it just "nothing"? or am i not understanding the real concept quite right? its an open question, plz feel free to state whatever you want, whether its theoretical facts or ur own personal beliefs, thanks.

ofcourse, with our present technology, and further more any technology we can possibly create, even if the human race can last for atleasta few million years, i dont think we will every figure out the true answer, but just to think in our human sense, if physical material existense is finite, doesnt it still yearn u to think of anything beyond? one of u mentioned a a vast array of universes outside our own, could there be a yet another infinite set of mega universes out there? i mean the whoel concept is mind boggling, it makes me think of infinity, and altogether makes me depressed that ill never get to know the answer as none of us will ever.

Think of the universe as an analog to the SURFACE of the balloon that is being blown up. If you're an ant running around on the surface, you will not encounter an edge (ok, maybe a giant set of lips blowing on it, unless you let me remove that from the analogy). Anyway, this thing is getting bigger and bigger and the "stuff" of it--the rubbery surface area--is not expanding "into" anything, it's just getting more huge by the day.

Of course our "real" universe has more than two dimensions (and more than three dimensions, for that matter!). But like the balloon surface, it's size is NOT infinite, it IS curved in odd ways, and it does NOT have edges.

That's my sense of what is happening out there.

it ought to't, and it isn't. "They tells me that the universe is infinite, without centre and likely no part (notwithstanding there is and if there is, we received't see it). notwithstanding, the universe also exists in a finite part of area." The universe does not have a midsection, nor does it have an "part". As Clive and Rose communicate about, that's hyperspherical in geometry, and therefore is a finite, unbounded floor volume of area wrapped round a hyperspatial axis. you are able to shuttle indefinitely in any route, a similar way you are able to shuttle indefinitely alongside the face of the Earth, notwithstanding the floor volume of the universe and the floor part of the Earth are although both thoroughly finite. Lharvey - "yet what's infinite is the gap that that's increasing out into. that 3 dimensional emptiness extremely is going on for infinity in all 3 spatial dimensions." The universe is a self-contained phenomenon. it isn't increasing "into" something. there is also no "emptiness" that is going on in any respect. the entire volume of the universe is permeated by technique of the CMBR, besides as a skinny hydrogen gas, or perhaps contained in the interior maximum of intergalactic voids, there is not any aspect contained in the universe, everywhere, that you're more effective than some tens of millions of sunshine-years from a galaxy. no remember the position you go contained in the universe, you'll *continuously* be fairly close to at least something. GoodAdvice - "A immediately line vacationing on the speed of sunshine from the position the tremendous Bang occurred will mark the sting of the universe, because it is the barrier the position time exists, and thanks to the obstacles of the speed of sunshine it isn't a threat to get previous this." i'm not precisely effective what that's you attempt to assert. the tremendous Bang became the improve of area itself. there is not any "position" the position "the tremendous Bang occurred", there is not any "fringe of the universe", and "the barrier the position time exists" would not even commence to make experience.

Life is a mystery. Infinite means no beginning and no end. All matter has a beginning and an end. So nothingness could in fact be limitless. It is known that matter and gravity bend space and light, so perhaps the universe is not a perfect circle. I believe that the macrocosm is endless, no matter how big something gets, it is just a small part of something else. Like a suburb is part of a city, a city is part of a country, a country is part of a continent, a continent is part of the earth, the earth is part of the solar system, the solar system is part of the milky way, the milky way is part of a super galaxy, and the super galaxy is probably a small part of something even bigger. I think our universe is a small part of something bigger still. Who knows where it ends?

i too have heard the universe is constantly expanding. but that leads me to wonder where is it expanding too? and what's out there when our universe expands into to it I guess? the whole "edge" of the galaxy thing would kind of be like when your pot boils over. you have a finite space where matter can stay and when it becomes too much then it starts to overflow but yet still remain, for the most part, within the original space. it allows the matter to still remain while parts of it seep outwards creating more are in which to inhabit.

Yes - my understanding is somewhat similar to your understanding, in addition, I also believe that in the empty space beyond the universe, there could be millions of other universes and so on. I am not going to think about his factor beyond this point because at this point of development, our technology in the year of 2006 is not sufficient to prove it. We only can have speculations and concepts.

When people use the word "universe," they are referring to the "visible universe."

It is obvious the visible universe is expanding. Which means the universe must continue into infinity. And, is most likely eternal since there is no other viable or logical alternative.

Infinity & eternity are two concepts outside our range of comprehension.

The concept of "Infinite" is flawed. Nothing physical can be "Infinite". There is an edge to everything.

Why don't you ask it yourself? Are you infinite? Are you all that?
Why you big baby! Tell us who did it and we will tell you who did it! 1,2, go....
