You are most likely missing an update that needs to be installed before sp2 for it to work.

I've had the same problem. Sometimes, it's best to wait until it comes up in the automatic updates. Takes fricken hours, but in the long run, it saves some frustration.
Another issue is that you might need to temporarily disable your Anti-Virus protection.Downloading it through an AV might corrupt some files or twist them around.
Don't try to download it from a third party, anytime I tried to do that, it would get to 211 of 266MB and get hung up,forcing me to start all over.
You can also order SP2 on CD through Microsoft. It's free, all you have to do is pay for S&H. Takes 4-6 weeks though.
There's nothing wrong with SP2, as long as your copy of XP is valid. Even if it isn't, there are ways around the validation notification. There are also other downloads through Microsoft that require you to be running SP2 for them to work. Not only that, but it also adds driver support for add-on hardware like USB 2.0, and some anti-virus software recomends having SP2 installed before installing their programs.

If the install failed, you don't have to reload XP, because it was never fully installed. If you are in doubt, check your system properties.

OKe,....administrator privelage, is where you're getting it wrong. disable administrator account unless you wanna have major problems if you lose the pass. control panel - classic view - user accounts.

more imp. once you have a partial or a failed sp2 instal you have to reformat xp all over again. And don't forget to format the drive first,. to ntfs system. else your system's going to be unstable. And whatever happens don't interrupt sp2 regardless of how much time it takes,...else you'd have to go through the whole installation of xp ...but it's worth the trouble. go to softwarepatch and get sp2,...maybe the problem just might lie with genuine validation....

U need administrative privilege to install service pack, that means u need a administrative login account. If u already tried in a admin account then download the service pack again. If it not works then reinstall windows and then try again.

Are you running the update for Home or Professional XP? Is yours a legal version OS?

Did you get it from Windows Updates?

i refuse to install service pack 2 for winxp...there are no security patches or anything critical in it...just updates for programs that if you use you will have to download anyway and windows verification programs and every time i have installed it has wreaked havoc on my computer so i stopped installing it and have had no problems.....
