Remove the programs you don't need by going to the control panel and selecting the add or remove programs function. Things you don't need (trials or games) should be removed.

Answering this question requires more information from you. Even though you recently purchased the laptop, the size of the hard drive makes a difference on how much data and/or programs you can store on it. While using the disk-defrag utility frees up some storage space, typically the amount freed is not large. The main reason for using the disk-defrag utility is to move various scattered parts of programs closer together. This speeds up the time it takes the computer to access the various files of a particular program.

One place that usually consumes a large amount of your hard drive is the Temporary Internet File Folder. To clear that folder on Internet Explorer, click TOOLS > INTERNET OPTIONS then in the center section titled “Temporary Internet Files,” press the DELETE FILES button. The process may take a few minutes. If you use a broadband connection to access the Internet, you may lower the number of files stored in that folder by clicking the SETTINGS button. Change the “Amount of disk space to use” to 128 MB for a 60 GB or larger hard drive. Change the amount to 64 MB for hard drive sizes between 20 GB and 59 GB. Make the amount 32 MB for hard drives less than 20 GB in size. (These values represent my opinion; but have produced great results for me. Others may recommend different values based upon the specifications of your system.)

Something to keep in mind is that video and audio files take up quite a bit of space. Some laptops come with a 6.4 GB hard drive. This is only 2.4 GB larger than the iPod Nano 4 GB. Some programs take up large amounts of space on hard drives as well.

If your hard drive is 20 GB or larger, you should visit some of the websites that scan your computer for viruses and spy ware. Most of the major virus-protection software vendors offer free online scans.

If you still have problems with your hard drive after reading this, feel free to contact me via email.

Good luck!

Time to start uninstalling programs you don't use.. Most likely your computer came preloaded with a bunch of junk you don't need/use. Goto control panel, add/remove programs.. And uninstall programs you are aware of.. But never use.
Then highlight your c: drive in windows explorer.. And right click.. Properties.. Click disk cleanup.. Click more options tab. Under System Restore.. Click Clean Up.. Click Yes... Then click OK.. Then Yes again.. That will give you back some of the space lost.

Press shift delete, and that way stuff you don't need goes directly trashed.

2. remove programs from add/remove programs. And lastly get yourself a memory stick,.., upto 1 gb shld be fine. And if you have money, fix some extra ram.

de fragmenting saves you little space, what it helps improve is the program performance w.r.t speed.

~~if you are short on space you will either need to buy a 2nd hard drive, or delete some of the things you have on the laptop.... you could get a portable usb external hard drive to use as your secondary drive and just run your operating system on your lap top. that may be the least expensive way to fix the problem.~~

yeah, remove all those trial versions personal computers come loaded with. Empty the recycle bin too. Also, choose, if you have installations disks, see what programs you are likely to use rarely, and uninstall it, then you can install it when you really need it and take it off again. I do it all the time to optimize my computer.

Maybe too many photos, too much music, who knows.

Burn your photos, videos, and music off to cd or dvd. That should free up lots of space.

Good Luck
