Hi I have 4 tattoos on my back (One large tribal below neck, one 3" black rose, one softball sized heart with tribal, and one 6" wide on my waist on the righ side) and one super large Genesh on my arm (from the top of my arm about 8" down and 8" wrap). I know that the one on my arm hurt the most. The upper back did not hurt, the new one I just recently got on the shoulder blade hurt a little more than I remembered the other one being, and the lower back hurt a little as it got closer to the spine.

I heard that the closer you are to bone the more it hurts however, it really depends on your pain tolerance. I have a pretty high pain tolerance but my ganesh still took three sessions (6 hours +) but it is full color not shading or bare.

Just be sure to pick out something that you can live with it for the rest of your life, it should be artistic to you because some of these tattoo artists really are "artist". Challenge your artist, don't go flash art, you will have better results (I don't mean freehand, I mean pick an idea and let your artist do his magic)

Good luck

I got my first tattoo on my ankle. You can forget about it not hurting, because it's going to. If you don't think you can stand the pain, then don't do it! It feels like someone taking a lit cigarette and putting it on your skin. It burns like Hell!!!! Plus if you're getting it on your ankle you'll need to get it a little bigger otherwise you'll lose the detail work in it. Don't get it on your lower back, it will stretch out as you get older and won't look good AT ALL. Find a spot that won't stretch (which is why I chose the ankle). Good luck!

Tattoos hurt, its the truth, no matter where you get them, they hurt but honestly it's not so bad after awhile you sorta get numb..one tattoo artist told me they hurt in areas that don't get alot of exposure to the sun and I heard the ones on the neck can be pretty intense....I had my first on my upper arm and it wasn't too bad....the second one was a bracelet around my wrist which wasn't too bad till he went on the palm side....i plan to get another one within the next couple weeks on my lower arm....and this is coming from someone who can't even look at a needle when I get a shot or blood taken......if it was that bad I never would have gone back for more..you can do it!

I would guess the ankle would hurt less, the back is a very sensitive area. Also I would agree with the others that lower back tattoos are overdone and much too common, everyone has them. And personally I think they look a little skanky.

Red,

Thanks for the question.

A tattoo is injected on the epidermis. The pain depends on the skill of the operator.

It is also a wound and can get infected. You need to check that the place you get it is clean and it is done by a licenced operator. You need to make sure that your hepatitis and tetanus injections are up to date and that you make the tattooist aware of any conditions you have.

You also need to keep the tattoo clean.

Go with the ankle. Everyone has a tattoo on their lower back. It is the "tramp stamp" spot.

Get it on your back. Chances are there is less fat on your ankles, and more bone. It hurts most on the bone.
