can you work the AA program with out a sponsor?

There is no mention of sponsors in the first 164 pages of the Big Book.

Personally, I think sponsorship is one of the worst things about AA. There are too many people who will insist that you do all sorts of things that have nothing to do with staying sober. Petty tyrants on ego trips who demand that you call them at a specific time daily and put you down if you're not working the program as they see fit.

I don't believe in AA, but I do believe in this: Build yourself a sober network, people you can call, hang out with who don't drink and can share some insights on early recovery. Unfortunately, sometimes the only way to meet real, live people is in the rooms. But after that, start building a life that doesn't revolve around alcohol, doing it or not doing it; as long as your in the rooms the focus in your life is still on alcohol.
