you work the steps by doing them. and when you get fromstep one to step twelve you work them again from step one to step twelve...
read each step over while you are working it. The term 'working the steps' means you don't just think it through, you don't just feel it, it means you actively work the step.

\The 12 steps are a religious conversion program . the have absolutely nothing to do with a substance problem . You can only "work" the 12 steps you come to believe in the God of AA and it's many carbon copy's .
One truly cannot work the steps at all all you have to do in the dogma of the 12 steps is to believe in st Bill W read his screed the Big book formally know as Alcoholics is Anonymous . get a sponsor submit to that persons will and the groups will .
It is better to seek non12 step help and try to find what reasons you choose to drink or drug to excess and work from their AA Has less than 5% success rate most people do not even attend more than one or two meetings .
As sone one else said God cannot "cure Substanceabuse or for that matter anything else. that has been studied and shown to be true . though Meditaion /prayer may help you relax which might in some cases help with some probels . the post about taing the cotton out of your ears and putting it in your mouth shows the mean sprited confrotntational nature of AA NAt. a vulnerabvle hurting person does not need to be told the are powerlss and only the God of the 12 steps can help them AA ect has a very high sucide rate .
If you do decide to stay with a 12 step program be very careful as many of the people attend meetings are sent their against their will by a court for any number of crimes from DUI to sexual assault against a minor .
There many other programs to help most stop or moderate on their own . .All in all it is best to avoid what many are now calling a dangerous religious cult whit many sexual predators in its ranks
Please check out the links below
There is also a grwong number of internet lists and groups on Yahoo and other sources created by people have had thier lives harmed in many ways by 12 step programs research AA and its spinoff well before join this harmful cult which worships a deeply distrubed man who has passed away and has not changed in nearly 80 years . any group that says they are the one and only way is a gruop to avoid .
Best of luck to you

I never could either. I bounced in and out of the rooms for almost two decades, only managing a few months sobriety at a time. It wasn't until I took responsibility for my actions and quit trying to force myself into a program that didn't fit, that I was finally able to put down the bottle.
I was told that I could remain an atheist, but I had to find a Higher Power, one I prayed to, who would answer my prayers. Sounds like a god to me. But not the God I was raised with...the God of AA can't cure alcoholism, only grant you a daily reprieve. That whole daily reprieve thing sounds a lot like miracles on demand to me. The God I was raised with granted us Free Will and expected us to use it.
There will always be people in the rooms telling you you're doing it all wrong. They're just trying to convince themselves that they're doing it right. You're doing fine as long as you're not drinking, don't let anyone tell you different.
If AA was a real "support" group and/or the newcomer was really the most important person in the room, they wouldn't be telling you to shut up and listen.
I was able to get all the support I needed online:

The way that you will know if you are doing the steps of AA accurately, is that you will see an improvement in the quality of your life, your sense of direction, purpose, your relationships will improve, and hopefully, your interest in the object of your obsession (alcohol, drugs, food, whatever the addiction is) will become more manageable. You will begin to get to what lies underneath the addiction, and tackle your problems in a way that lasts longer, provides a better catharsis, and overall makes each day a bit easier to wake up to. It's not a contest, and sometimes people in AA can get a little over zealous -- they're just so thrilled to have found something that works for them, that they want it for you too. Just find a sponsor you can relate to and work the steps a day at a time, or a moment at a time. I wish you well!

go to a meeting and get a sponsor, choose a sponsor with experiences that you can resonate with. if that sponsor does not work out for you then ask another or try another meeting where you feel comfortable and look again. you do not have to choose just one sponsor for your life time and a good sponsor will understand if you feel you would get more from moving on to another person to sponsor you.

read the book, go to meetings, take the cotton out of your ears and put it in your mouth, shut up and listen, dont use, take responsibility for your actions at this moment in time, know you are exactly where you are supposed to be at this moment and refer to the top of the list again and again.
