my check engine light has came on about 2 weeks ago, my hubby changed the egr valve and now it is back on again with the same p401 code. Could it be the valve again or should we change the sensor? please help :)

Pay attention to gearbox's post above, he is correct. The EGR valve was never bad, just the DPFE sensor. Remove the plastic cover on the top of the engine thats stamped 5.4 liter and just to the right of the throttle body is an aluminum sensor with two hoses running to it, from the EGR tube. If you replace this sensor, your problem will be solved. If you call your local dealer and tell them that you need a DPFE sensor the basic part number is 9J460, they will give you a price. Should be somewhere around 75 bucks.

Most of the p0401s on them things were caused by a sensor called a DPFE sensor only available at the dealer.... The sensor breaks down and either shows too much voltage or not enough voltage at idle....

Hardly ever see the EGR mess up on those vehicles.. 95% are DPFE, other 5% are EGR ports plugging up in intake, but most of those were earlier model vehicles...

base number for the part is a 9J460 and is called a DFPE sensor and runs anywheres from $50-100 with those I think at $50 for that model...

Just next time bring it somewheres for accurate diagnosis because I've seen too many change parts that autozone and the like hint are bad due to codes and then they get mad at the professional tech. cause it's usually something else...

just remember to disconnect the battery for 5 minutes before driving again if hubby changes the part himself to clear codes and allow the car to relearn everything

When the light comes on it means that the computer has found something wrong with the way the cars computers controlls the normail opperation of the car.
First let me ask this.
If you changes the egr valve did you cancle the cars computers memory.
Just replacing the part and not clearing the cars computer will not fix the problum
The cars computer still thinks the old part is installed and sending faulse information to the computer.
The computer does not know you put in the new part untill you clear the trubble code it already had set.
Clear the code then see if the light comes on again.
If it does, take it to Auto-Zone and thy will scan it for you free and tell you why it turned on again

My father in law just had his truck burn down, his kept showing the check engine come on and had it fixed, I was also watching the news and another had burnt down in a garage with the same problem. I think they were the same year as yours and there was a recall, check it out before yours burns down as well.
