Usually from an above ground reservoir, such as an artifical lake formed from damming a lake or stream. The water is filtered (usually through sand) and then clorinated to kill off some of the more harmful bacteria. In some jurrisdictions, tap water comes from wells drilled into the ground, or directly from a large nearby river.
