I love my guenia pigs,i started with a female&a male.They are now just as much a part of my family as my kids.My female just had 3 healthy babies on the 16th of July 2006.They are still with the mother but i am unsure what age to take them from the mother.Also what ,if any extra care does the mother need after having them.

You need to seperate the boys out in about six weeks. They will start eating regular food almost right away. But will still need mama for a bit. If you haven't already, you need to take out your male, or you will have another litter right behind this one. Having babies so close will be hard on your female.
If you leave them all together for six months, you will have alot more guinea pigs. G.pigs are rodents, and develop quickly.
I love G. pigs, they are a lot of fun and have quirky personalities. We love our G. pig. His name is Hunter, and he puts up with the kids carrying him around and holding him really well.

Well like most rodents, guinea pigs can become pregnant very soon after giving birth and the babies will inbreed once at sexual maturity so keep the boys and girls in different cages

**You can handle the babies as soon as you like after the birth procedure is finished and the babies are all washed and dried by their mum. Handling from a very early age will help them to grow into happy piggies that are not scared of being held. You may want to wait until a day after the birth in case it distresses the mother - it depends on the pig.
**The babies come out fully formed and will be running around very shortly after birth - they will obtain milk from their mother (who has two nipples) and will begin eating independently (pellets, hay & veggies) normally within a day or so. You will need to determin the sex of the babies by the time they are 4 weeks of age. The babies will suckle their mother's milk for about 4 weeks and should be weaned at about 4 weeks of age - which is when you should separate the male baby's from the females - you can leave the baby girls with their mother. You may want to put any baby males in with their father.
**Don't forget that if you have male babies they are capable of breeding with their mother & sisters at about 4 weeks of age so make sure you separate the males from the females at 4 weeks. For the same reason be careful with the father, don't let him have access to the mother after birth or to the daughters after they are a few weeks old.

Leave them with her until they're about six months of age. Then sex and separate them. Just keep feed in the cage along with water. Mom and kids will do just fine without any extra trouble on your part.
