if you for some reason you are unable to go over to an LCD, turn your monitor to it's highest refresh rate to reduce eye strain. 60hz is standard, and i understand that by 85hz yer eyes have it pretty easy. although you will always have those who say turn it as high as possible, because it does get even easier for your eyes as you increase.

It well know fact if one is looking at the monitor for long time, you tend to blink less. So you should every 15 min give your eyes a rest. Some people use a screen shade forget the name it can take the glare from looking at you monitor for hours and less eye strains

first of all its not just the monitor u can really reduce eye strain by not having glare. also, you might want to set the refresh rate. right click, properties, (far right) settings, advanced, then click the monitor tab look for where it sais screen refresh rate. set it to the highest hertz, (mine is at 75). some go up to 125. that will help alot , i even did it myself and thats how i know.

An LCD flat screen should do the trick, they emit less light that the eyes find irritating which causes less strain. Not to mention that they are so cool looking.

if you can affort it, get an lcd monitor. get those with fastest refresh rates. if not, get one with at least 8ms. this will give u clear images. try samsung monitors. i find it perfect. if not, set the highest possible refresh rate (in Hz) on your crt. scroll around with the settings available in your monitor. play around with them till u have a most comfy 1. get a screen filter if u like.

You might try an LCD monitor, they have no flicker at all. Go to your local computer warehouse store where they have them all on display, and see which ones you like best. I have an NEC Multisync LCD that I'm very happy with.
