Wow... I can't believe the ansers some people post. Clearly they don't really care to help others, which makes me sad.
Ferrets are very domesticaed, so don't listen to that at all. The have been for 100's of years, even if CA doens't recognize it.
As to how to stop digging, a dig box is a great idea. The best way to make one so that there's no mess is to get a fairly shallow plastic box that has a lid. Cut a ferret sized hole in the lid. Fill the box with the rice, put on the lid. Show ferrets how to enter and exit the box. Place the box on top of the area where the ferret is currenlty digging.
If that doesn't solve your problem, you just may have a digger. One of my ferrets, Spaz, just couldn't stand the carpet when we bought our new house and nothing would stop her from digging... we opted to get rid of the carpet instead of the ferret. Would never get rid of my girls!

You could also try spraying some bitter apple where the ferret is digging. They don't like the way it tastes or smells and will usually stay away from it. After a while of spraying the area, the ferret won't even come near it anymore.

Put heavy duty plastic on the Ground with like duct tape. also try to provide them with a dig box... a box or large plastic tupperwear filled 1/3 fulll of un cooked corn kernals or sand. Ps dont listen to a word the person says who thinks that a 100% domestic animal should not be a pet, obviously they are not informed on ferrets at all.

peacegirl gave an excellent answer.
one further note of advice: do NOT, under any circumstances, use any form of clumping kitty litter as "digging sand" for your ferret. this stuff emits a toxic powder and will infect your ferret's nasal passages as they like to "root around" in soft material. buy some of the compressed newsprint pellets or ground corn cob litter made especially for ferrets.

they are natural diggers. They aren't truly meant to be a pet. They are cute and soft though. Funny little guys too. Just because they are "domesticated" doesn't mean that their natural insticts won't stay with them
