Depends on the state. California its 3-4 months. Then once you get the results, you get sworn in. After that you can practice.

I take the California Bar this Tuesday and find out [that] I passed in November, and get sworn in in December.

after you pass the bar you are presented to the court and have a formal acceptance by the court.


But normally no more than 1/2 that take the bar exam pass on the first time, most states only offer the bar twice a year.
So a person can go 1 to 3 years just passing the bar after they graduate law school, if they ever pass.

Depends on state law. In most states there is a mass swearing in ceremony of those who passed the exam; but you can be individually sworn in by a judge. After you are admitted to the state bar you can be admitted to the Federal bar. Some Federal Districts have their own mini-exam on the Federal Rules.
