Honestly it depends on how close I am to the light when it turns...however, most of the time I slow down.

It depends on where you are, but neither flooring your gas pedal or slamming on brakes is a good idea. If you are in an area that's not congested, you might speed up a little to assure you are under the light by the time it turns red. If you are in a congested area, speeding up could endanger you and others. Putting on brakes so that you come to a safe stop is okay, but if you brake too hard and end up in the middle of the intersection, you are going too fast to start with and you could be cited for not having control of your vehicle. Stopping safely where you should stop is the best way to handle a yellow light.

In Ontario the law states: If the light changes to amber upon entering an intersection, and it is unsafe to come to a complete stop before the white line, you may proceed with caution.

The yellow indication or interval is to warn motorists that there is about to be a reassignment of right of way at a signalized intersection and the he or she should make the proper decision about stopping or going through the intersection.

A yellow light on a through movement typically lasts 4 seconds and there is usually 1 second on a through movement where the signal is red in all directions so you have 5 seconds (typically) to clear the intersection. It is up to driver's judgement to make the decision to go on through the intersection or to stop.

p.s. watch for Mr. Policeman sitting at that convenience store on the corner :-))

If you live in Middletown Ohio You better hit your brakes, they have red light cameras. They will send you a ticket in the mail. It will have your license plate # on it so you either have to pay it or it goes on your credit report.

Stop safely and remember to only drive at a safe speed. If you feel that you should slam on the brakes, then you're probably driving too fast.

SLOW DOWN!!! My sister was hit by a guy who sped up and she died from it. I would never want someone else's life to be taken because someone couldn't have waited at a light for 2 minutes.
