Hard to imagine football on TV without him around at leat once in awhile...I know some people dislike him,

John Madden is an institution.
He was a Hall of Fame American football head coach of the Oakland Raiders from 1969-1978. Even though he lead the Raiders to victory in Super Bowl XI, Madden is perhaps best known for his nearly three-decade career as a color commentator for various broadcasting networks, where he has become household name. He currently serves as an extremely popular TV football commentator, author, and commercial pitchman for various products and retailers. This subsequent profession resulted in countless endorsement deals, including the popular, NFL-branded home video game series that has carried his name since 1990: Madden NFL. Madden was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame on February 4, 2006.
His game is available throughout the world so he is well known even though he is not seen on television such as here in Australia.

John Madden is an icon - he is symbolic of the rise of the NFL as the pre-eminent sports league in the world. Sure, I put on Yahoo! Music and turn of the sound when I am playing the Madden football video game, but that doesn't mean I don't like the guy. He can be big, loud and annoying, but he knows his stuff and he stands up for real, smashmouth football.

Never before has a man been so widely praised for saying so little. If you actually listen to the things he says, he makes the most obvious inane comments. "So when the guy down there makes his cut and is open, the quarterback throws him the ball." Somehow, because of his colorful delivery I guess, that is somehow heard as "insightful". He is a blithering idiot and I can't stand him. And by the way, if he hadn't attatched his name to the most successful video game franchise of all time, he would have been off the air a decade ago.

John Madden was a good coach, and was a decent commentator up until about 10 years ago. Now, he's just a blathering idiot who has man-love for Brett Favre.

Heres John..." Whoa now theres something you dont see everyday a good hard pass, back in my day we never threw that pigskin and we stopped every 10 minutes to eat!" He was a great coach for the Oakland Raiders! The Super Bowl victories will tell you that. As for a football commentator, he is obviously knowledgeable but a bit abrasive. He is even more abrasive and almost comical in commercials for products such as Ace Hardware and Tanactin (spelling?). That is why they hire someone that is as abrasive as him so that you will remember the products. I guess it worked!

Madden is a good guy and will make his millions of dollars like others.. But like others before him there will be no one to compare him too cause he is an icon in his own right..

I personally like the guy. He has intreresting commentary. I will miss him on Monday Night Football--now we must listen to Theisman--gag!!! He lives in my community and has several businesses there, too.

A great coach and a decent announcer before he began professing his hidden, yet intense, homosexual longings for Brett Favre.

I think he's a slobbering fat guy who wrote a book...One time his slobbering spit came at me through the TV set...it was disgusting!
