That guy sounds like my father in law, whom I love to death, but who shares the philosophy that babies should never be outside in the heat (or in the rain, snow, cold, wind, etc.) I think there is absolutely no problem with babies being outside as long as you put on sunscreen and provide plenty of fluids-there are babies out there that live in hot climates, rain forests, etc.

The short answer to your question is that before air conditioning most people had enough sense to keep their babies out of the sun.
The long answer starts with noting that 80 years ago was 1926. Willis Haviland Carrier invented the modern air conditioner in 1902. So there was air conditioning 80 years ago.
But there was also a lot more childhood disease, so most people had a lot more to worry about than if their child got too hot in the sun. Polio was a major concern up until 50 years ago. In the farther past smallpox, typhus and a host of other diseases could easily kill a small child. And then there was the biggest killer of all, diarrhea. Not only has diarrhea killed countless children over time, but it also killed more soldiers in the US Civil War than bullets did.

I lived along side the Amish community for almost 4 years, and since they have no electric to run AC I often wondered how they did it. Most of the time, they just made sure there was shade, and a cool breeze. I don't know how they did it 80 years ago, but if the Amish can still do it, so can we. Babies are not as fragile as some people think that they are. That is why there is so much sickness now days, babies are not immune to anything. They don't need to have tons of clothes on year around, and it don't hurt them to get dirty while playing... They will wash off..(you know that the Amish still lays their babies on their bellies to sleep.) I think people should lighten up on the you don't know how to raise a baby thing. You do what you think is best for your baby, and best of luck to you

Babies like anyone else benifit from fresh air and sunlight. I know my nine month old acts better after a day out. If she is inside too much she can be a total pain in the butt!
As long as you use sunscreen and plenty of water to drink you little one is fine! Don't let nosy familiy members tell you otherwise. You're the mom, what you say goes! :)

I think if you make sure the baby is sufficiently hydrated, then it's probably fine. However, babies are less capable than children & adults are of regulating their body tempuratures. That's why babies seem to get fevers for no reason. But, if the baby wasn't in the sun, and was getting lots of fluids, then I'm sure all was fine. And you're right! We seem to take a lot for granted these days!!
Much Love!!

We're spoiled by all the amenities, like AC and TV, and all the entertainment available to us. Eighty years ago, and even before that, when it was hot, EVERYONE was hot, young and old, and even babies. They were used to it. Then when it was winter, they built fires to keep warm but away from the fire, EVERYONE was cold. Can you imagine getting up in the middle of the night, having to pee, and having to put your coat and boots on and traipse outside to an outhouse? Think about it. We are REALLY spoiled today.

your right, if you have a healthy baby expose it to the world - every day it';s learning how to be, keeping him/hre indoors all the time could lead to a shutin lifestyle
