It is a good thing. Anything other than the US being the only super power is a refreshing news.

In my opinion the Chinese governement has always been a waste of space. I mean why are they a permanant member of the UN Security Council, every decision made or any idea created they always veto it. I personally believe that they are a superpower already, and I say that with a level of confidance because like others they have Nukes, and they have no problems in selling and using them. Yet that is just on a military scale, I would say the same for the US, yet I wouldn't call them a superpower no more because lets face it, the country is bankruptvbecause of its massive defence budget.

Addition:- I liked the point on the spread of Communism, but if your a sociologist you will know that true communism has never exsisted, true communism is defined as Marxism, Communist Russia between 1930 and 1989 was based on Starlinism were as China and North Korea use Leninist communism. I think if Karl Marx and even Engals were alive they would be discusted in how their idea has been abused.

Of course it will be a bad thing, should china be in that position to run the world economy they would destroy it. A very high percentage of cheap goods are made there and once they are as economically secure as the USA do you really think they will continue to make and sell them at such a low price? Of course not, once they are in that position of power the worlds economy is going to collapse. Concidering there history dont expect them to put the world before themselves. Allowing them to become a superpower is allowing the world to go into reccession. Are you prepared to leave the worlds economy in the hands of china, a nation that is completly inexperianced in all areas of running a succesful economy. Evidence of this is there population laws, they have a one child policy which has severly limited the number of young people in the nation and within forty years they will have the worlds worst ageing poulation crisis. That itself could send the worlds economy into reccesion. So im going to say that china becoming a superpower is a bad thing.

China will become very formidable in the coming decades.

Their threat to US primacy will peak in two generations (about forty years) but they lack the temperament to be a true superpower like the USA.

The US possesses an awesome/terrifying nuclear equipped Navy.

China will never have this kind ability to project power, nor the mindset to use it. For thousands of years china has looked within, and has never really explored or attacked beyond their immediate borders.

Plus in order to feed and equip their massive population now, the Chinese government is mortgaging their future environmental security. Government crackdowns on freedom and their suppression of their own 100 million Muslims will drain their resources as well.

Their population is aging as is the west's and they will have a massive health care crisis in 40 years that makes America's health problems look like a skinned knee.

Within twenty years they will start losing jobs to Africa as they begin to suffer from massive outsourcing (It has already begun)

All the elites and middle classes of China are currently being educated in English, as such they consciously and unconsciously adopt Western beliefs and ideas.

When some form of Democracy takes root, as it has already done in India and every other major power, Chinese society will be struggling from internal turmoil and civil wars, as it has all throughout its long history.

Not to mention epidemics and pandemics striking the most populated country in the world (SARS, Bird Flu, AIDS, something new and more virulent)

So it is neither good nor bad, just different. Maybe good if it makes America try harder to succeed, especially in space technology.

It is to a great extent already a superpower because of its population numbers. Every electrical appliance you seem to buy nowadays has Made in China marked on it. Obviously you cannot say it is a bad thing because it has as much right as other countries to follow the path that suits it. God help humanity however.

I lived and worked in China for most of a decade and they already are a superpower. I know they are not really recognized as such but they basically are. Thanks to Clinton's administration, they got their hands on a lot of our technology ie. super computers and weapon technology. China's government is made up of the same old men who helped perpetuate Tiananmen and they still think the same way they did back then. They do not respect human rights, copyrights or intellectual property rights. They have a deep sense of entitlement toward the West and want to run with the big boys but don't want to follow they same rules. They envy our wealth and power and want it for themselves. I am very interested in seeing how the Olympics go they were outraged when the US beat them out previously on one of their bids.

Depends on what path the Chinese as a people take. Right now I am hostile to the idea because they have a repressive Communist regime (should they become a superpower who'd think the commies wont try to export their communism again?). But if the Chinese for one reason or another decide to reform towards greater political freedom...maybe they could become a positive force for the world.

I think the most interesting developments of this century will be the Chinese enlightenment, when the rapid technological advancement of China will be followed by demands for greater social and democratic freedoms from within.

From a biblical reference, the 8th and Last king, is the UN.
Not China.
US and England are the king of the South.
The Middle East, may be the final King of the North.
Both are replace by the 8th and final king, the UN.
Keep your eyes open, it will happen soon and Babylon the Great, the world empire of false religion, has fallen in 1914, will soon be destroyed by the UN.
