I've used a drimmel with moderate success and was hoping to find a more constuctive and/or effective method of carving it.

What kind of bit have you been using?

For the larger chunks obviously a chisel would be preferable, I did a few pieces for a sculpture class and the dremel worked ideally.
Go with a silicon carbide grinding stone bit, with a tapered tip, if you havent already for the details. You won't find a better tool for small particular carving. Don't be afraid of router bits either, they're good for heavy duty grinding.
And for the final polishing, I used and had success with a fine emery polishing wheel.

Good luck, and cheers

Sandstone is very soft anyway and you have many options for cutting this type of stone.

But if you can afford it go with diamond studded blades. You can even buy Drimmel attachments that are diamond studded.

A diamond blade will cut marble and granite so sandstone won't be a problem either.
