Roger Connor
When Babe Ruth hit 59 home runs in one year, 1922, and hit his 137th career record the same season, he surpassed the previous lifetime major league career record held by Roger Connor. Babe Ruth was the first player in history to hit over 30 homers in one season, the first to hit 40, 50 and 60.

I don't know about a single season, but Roger Connor was the career home run hitter before the babe. Babe Ruth also broke his own single season record three times before making the mark of 60 in 1927. So maybe the answer is Babe Ruth.

Williamson is the correct answer. The question referred to the single season, not the career home run record.

Whose, right? Ned Williamson's 27 in 1884.
It's not all that hard to look up, dude.
