I have a router that feeds to my desktop as well as a wireless router. If I try to consolidate the setup down to just the wireless router the connection stops working. Any suggestions?

Different DSL/cable services work differently. Take a look at the programming in the working router. Specifically, the connection settings. Then see if the wireless router supports the same settings.

If that doesn't get you anywhere do a little research on your service (charter, sbc dsl, cox, etc). If you have a Linksys go to their site and search their knowledgebase for use with your dsl/cable service. You'll find something to tell you the handful of critical settings - there's usually only one, plus the sign-in (user and password).

Sometimes there's another setting. With Charter cable they use the MAC address of the desktop network card. So your router has to spoof this MAC address.

Perseverance wins the day here. So hang in there.

Not sure, but maybe your router requires a desktop connected in order for the wireless to work.

Post the complete deatils of your setup and maybe we can help you. Need make and model numbers, as well as the IP ranges that you have configured. Do NOT post your public IP, though. We just need the private IP ranges that you are using.
