in case you didn't know, the state of NC gives poor people money to help pay their energy bills. it's called a "low income energy assistance" check, and it's issued just like any other state check. our tax dollars pay for it. now I'm all for this, if people really need it.
but what I saw today turned my stomach. see I work in a grocery store, and people bring those checks in to get them cashed. today a couple came in with one of these, telling me how thankful they were to get it because they were so poor.
but as soon as we cashed it for them, they used half of it to buy booze. that's where my tax money goes. how unfair is that?

It's called buying votes. Try to take that 'wasted' check away from them and see what happens.
That person will gladly vote democratic for the rest of their lives.

I blame the state government of NC. Why don't the energy companies deal with the government for payment and not send the money to the poor. That's like leaving the keys of a porshe in the ignition running in the projects.

The project sounds good. It probably helps out a lot of people who really need it. As far as the booze buyers? They are making things tougher for themselves. They wouldn't get the checks unless they qualified, so they do need it. The fact that they are engaging in an expensive habit like alcohol consumption means they are probably doing without something else they really need. Feel sorry for them. They will probably live very tough lives.

You need to get the politicians to make the money only available to pay utility bills like they do in Pennsylvania. Low income people get what is called liheap ( heating assistance) which is paid directly to those who deliver the oil or the utility company. It can not be abused like in North Carolina. What the people of North Carolina need is smarter people in Raleigh.

I think those Agencies should only give vouchers or as they seem to do here in WI, People get their Statements from the Utility Co. and it shows how much Credit they still have. Using that money for any other use is FRAUD and it should be reported.

Honey, that what everyone is complaining about .. there is this girl in my home town that has two degrees, collects food stamps.lives in subsidized housing better than mine, free health care etc. and Knocks down about $4000.00 a month in child care.. and would not work in a pie factory tasting pie's..That's why so many Americans are republicans.... just trying to hold onto what they have worked for ..

People value something proportionately to the amount of effort they expend to acquire it. If you think NC is bad, you should see NY. They tax everybody who earns an honest buck and give it to the voluntarily idle, whose votes count the same as yours and mine.Ny is a great place to be if you're a lazy piece of ****.

They should issue them in the form of vouchers that are only redeemable to energy companies.

Indiana does that, too.
That really sucks, what they did. It seems that there should be a way for the government to directly pay the utility company instead of giving the money to the person.

It's terrible, isn't it? I am like you, I don't mind people getting the assistance that really need it, but the abuse of the system is a joke! They need to get a hold on these moochers and force them to repay all the money that have received!!!
