In order to get into medical school you will be required to have a bachelor degree.

You'll need one year of general biology, a year of general chemistry, a year of physical chemistry, and a year of physics -- included in your bachelor (4 year) degree.

After that, you'll attend a medical school, which will include the basic and medical sciences and several clerkships -- this also lasts four years.

Following that, to be a cardiothoracic surgeon, you'll complete a residency in general surgery (which is usually 5 years long) and then a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery (which can range from 3 to 4 years).

If you'd rather be a cardiologis (medical doctor specializing in the heart) you would do a four year residency in internal medicine, followed by a 3 year residency in cardiology or interventional cardiology.

Even after the surgery fellowship, more training is needed to be well versed in different types of surgeries -- a physician's learning is never ending.
