You send the rebate to the manufacturer - they are the ones offering the rebate, not the store that sold the item.

Possibly because the number of people who will actually send in for a "mail-in rebate" is lower than the people who would claim an "in-store rebate", so the company saves money.

they do it so you will forget and not get the rebate. you buy the product thinking you saved money, but never really get around to do the rebate and eventually you just settle for the price you paid. great marketing scheme!

Because most people don't send in their rebates. That way they don't have to give them and lose that money.

Because they hope you are too lazy to send in all the things they require for you to get the money back.
