Not always, and let me give an anecdote:

When I was pregnant with my son, the doctor used ultrasound measurements to determine that my due date was January 1, 2002.

I calculated the due date using first day of last period, and I came up with December 18, 2001.

My son was born December 16, 2001. They thought he was a little early...but you tell me how a baby who weighs 8 lbs, 4 oz can be considered early! LOL

I'd just use it as a ballpark figure.

The measurments that they take of your baby when performing an ultrasound give them a very good idea of your baby's gestational age. It is more accurate that depending on calculating it from the first day of your last period, since your ovulation does not always occur on the same day. Try not to get too emotionally attached to that date though. Most babies aren't born on their due date, usually within two weeks before or after it. Good luck!

Not necessarily to the day--babies come when they're good and ready--but an ultrasound near the end of the first trimester or early in the second is generally considered the most reliable way to determine your baby's "age."

More accurate than the method the doc uses before the ultrasound which is just feeling how big your uterus is.
