Coos Bay, Oregon. It's on the coast. 25,000 people in the 2 town "metro" area. It's kinda like a minerature San FranCisco, but the temp is a little cooler. The politics is wide ranging and the population very diverse...from logger to tree hugger. it's separated from other areas of Oregon by distance, ocean and mountains, all by it self, but big enough to find diverse employment. The wild rivers are close as well as coastal mountains. Go salmon fishing in the rogue River to the south, as big of rapids as you are ready for. The downtown life ranges from funky blues to cowboy. I lived there 15 years. You would have to get a "drift" boat.
