It's not in a state. Are you putting Washington DC into the space for city? There should be a District of Columbia choice in the state drop box.

It is in no state. Washington is simply in the District of Columbia. Suburbs extend into Maryland and Virginia, but Washington itself is in D.C. No state.

D.C. is not technically part of any state. this was necessary so that the national seat of government not be part of any constituent state. the "founders" feared that there would be the appearance of favoritism if the federal government selected any one state. whether or not credit card carriers or other private entities choose to treat it as though it were part of Maryland or Virginia is beside the point. It is the "District of Columbia," and is not a state.

It's in D.C. It doesn't belong to any state because that would give that state an unfair advantage, but Maryland and Virginia promised a section along the Potomac for it. Maryland gave the land, but Virginia never did.

It is not part of a state, it is a separate area. What you need to do is for the city put in Washington, and for the state put DC.
